Mekhi and Greg faced adversity when alleged eligibility issues derailed Mekhi’s sophomore season. Through it all, father and son stayed focused on their goals, and last fall, during Mekhi’s junior season, he torched opponents for 93 catches for 1,065 yards and 18 touchdowns in the ten-game pandemic shortened season. The work and preparation that Mekhi and Greg put in throughout Mekhi’s career were evident as Mekhi exploited defenses (facing mostly double-coverage) all season long. By the time Blue Valley North faced off with Derby in the Kansas 6A Championship Game, it was apparent that Mekhi was the best wide receiver in the state. Mekhi credits Greg for keeping him focused on taking his game to the next level. “In youth football, he always told me we were going to prepare for middle school football. In middle school, he told me we were going to prepare for high school football. And then now, since we’re in high school, he tells me that we’re going to prepare for college. So, it’s never preparing now in the moment. We’re preparing for what’s going to come,” described Mekhi.
We are anxious to see how Mekhi impacts Mizzou football, but for now, Mekhi and Greg have unfinished business with Kansas high school football. Mekhi and a talented Mustang roster are eager to make another state championship run next season. And at least for now, this father/son and player/coach are preparing for one last ride together.
