KC Athletes sat down with Victor Williams, one of Kansas City and Wyandotte County’s greatest hoopers. As a prep player, Williams led Wyandotte High School to the Kansas 5A State Championship and shared the DiRenna Award (honoring the top player in the Metro) with JaRon Rush. After graduating from Wyandotte High, Williams played his freshman season at Illinois State before transferring to Oklahoma State University. In his senior season, Williams was named to the All-Big 12 team by both the Associated Press and the Big 12’s coaches.
Williams described that competition motivated him as a young basketball player, and competition forced him to master his craft. During the interview, Williams compares the youth basketball scene during his formative years to the current state of youth basketball.
Currently, Williams coaches and trains young basketball players throughout the Metro. Williams teaches his athletes to “become comfortable being uncomfortable.” He challenges young athletes to face the tough times head-on because those are the times that develop you as a ballplayer.
